What this means for your runway
The classic "save 3-6 months" rule assumed a 2-month median job search. At 30 weeks median for Software Engineer in Austin at senior level, a prudent runway target is 12+ months — that covers the 75th percentile. If your Kyrovo AI Risk is Elevated, add another month.
Three things that measurably shorten a search
- 1.Warm network first, cold apps last. Referred candidates are ~4× more likely to get an interview and land ~30% faster (Jobvite Recruiter Nation 2024). 10 warm messages beats 100 cold applications.
- 2.Friday pipeline review. Track apps → first-rounds → on-sites → offers weekly. If any column stays empty two Fridays in a row, change tactics — don't try harder at the same thing.
- 3.Pick 15 target companies, not 150. Depth of research (one recent product move, one person, one problem you'd solve day-one) converts far better than volume.
