Am I being quiet fired?

Quiet firing is deniable by design: nobody says it, the role just gets worse until you leave on your own. Score the eight signals below and see where you actually stand — 60 seconds, nothing saved, no sign-up.

  • Has work, a project, or a report been moved away from you in the last 90 days?

Scope removal is the most reliable signal, because it has to happen before anyone can say you are not needed.

  • Have you been dropped from meetings, threads, or decisions you used to be in?

Exclusion usually starts one or two levels above you and travels down quietly.

  • Have your 1:1s been cancelled, shortened, or gone cold?

Managers pull back contact when they have been told something they cannot tell you yet.

  • Has written feedback turned negative after a run of positive reviews?

A sudden paper trail is how a documented exit gets built. The change in tone matters more than the content.

  • Has a raise, promotion, or budget for you been deferred with no new date?

'Revisit next quarter' with no date attached is a soft no about your future, not your performance.

  • Has HR or People been looped into conversations that used to be just you and your manager?

HR is added to routine conversations when the company wants a record of them.

  • Has someone been hired or moved into work that overlaps yours?

Overlap is often built before a transition, not after it.

  • Have you quietly lost access to systems, or had new approval steps added?

Access is administrative, so it changes early and nobody frames it as a decision about you.

0/ 100 signal strength

No real pattern here. What you are feeling is more likely load or a rough stretch than an exit being built.

Your one move this week

Ask your manager one question in writing: what does a strong next 90 days look like for me? A clear answer is reassurance you can keep.

Why companies do this instead of laying you off

Quiet firing is not usually cruelty. It is cheaper, and it is invisible on paper.

  1. It avoids severance. Someone who resigns is generally owed far less than someone who is let go — and in many countries, nothing at all.
  2. It avoids notice and reporting. Resignations do not appear in mass-layoff notifications or headcount-reduction reporting.
  3. It avoids the conversation. Making a role worse requires no meeting, no decision on record, and no one has to say the word.

What to write down, starting today

You are not building a case. You are building memory, because these changes are easy to forget and hard to reconstruct later.

  • ·Dates: when scope moved, when the meeting invite stopped, when the tone changed
  • ·Copies of positive reviews, praise, and results — saved to personal storage, not a work drive
  • ·Anything said out loud that was not put in writing, noted the same day
  • ·Your contract, offer letter, and any equity or bonus terms
